From Flower Fields to Fuzzy Friends: A Perfect Summer Day at Howell’s

There’s nothing quite like a summer day spent in the fresh air, surrounded by blooming flowers and curious farm animals.

At Howell’s Greenhouse and Pumpkin Patch, we mix generations of homegrown farming know-how with good old-fashioned fun to create a day your whole crew won’t forget. Whether you’re racing ducks or meandering through our flower fields, there’s a little something here for everyone.

A Blooming Start: Strolling the Flower Fields

Kick off your visit with a stroll through our flower fields. Every summer, Howell’s bursts into a patchwork of color with three acres of Strawflowers, Statice, and other blooms, grown with care for drying and display.

Our journey with flowers started back in the 1980s when Farmer Fred planted just a quarter acre during the farm crisis—a humble beginning that grew into one of our most cherished traditions.

Take your time walking among the flowers, snapping a few pictures, and learning how we preserve them to create unique dried floral arrangements. It’s more than just pretty scenery—it’s part of our farm’s story.

Meet the Fuzzy Friends

Next up: say hello to our barnyard buddies! Few things are better for the soul than time spent with friendly farm animals. From ducks making a splash in the raceways to goats always ready for a snack, our animal area is a big hit with both kids and grown-ups.

One of the most heartwarming parts of the day is goat cuddling. Our baby goats thrive on attention, and once you’ve snuggled one, you might just find yourself smitten. It’s the kind of Midwest magic that brings folks back every summer.

Playtime Galore

Once you’ve met our animals, it’s time to let loose and play! We’ve got all sorts of summer fun that keeps the good times rolling.

Classic Farm Fun for All Ages

Mud pie making is a messy must-do, where the littles can get creative in our outdoor kitchen. Pedal tractors and wiggle cars give young explorers the ride of their lives, while the slides, swings, and our giant corn pool are a blast for everyone. Think sandbox vibes—but with corn (and less cleanup).

Our duck races bring out a bit of friendly competition, and the pedal tractor course is just the thing for kids who like a challenge. Everywhere you turn at Howell’s, there’s hands-on fun that keeps the giggles going all day.

A Family Tradition with Heart

Howell’s is more than just a spot for flowers and fun. It’s a place where memories are made, where the roots go deep, and where our farm’s shift from row crops and livestock to a full-on family destination came from a whole lot of love and hard work.

From our first dried flower arrangements to our very first field trips in the ’90s, every step we’ve taken has been about creating a place where visitors feel like part of the family. Whether you’re cuddling a goat or taking in the sights of our blooming fields, you’re stepping into a story that started back in 1878 and keeps growing with every visitor.

Plan Your Visit

If you’re ready for a day full of sunshine, smiles, and maybe a bit of goat cuddling, Howell’s is the perfect spot. Pack your sunscreen, bring your sense of adventure, and don’t forget your camera—there are memories waiting to be made all around the farm.

Check out our summer schedule, grab your tickets, and come see why so many families make Howell’s a yearly tradition. Got questions? Call us at 515-981-0863. We can’t wait to see you out here, where the flowers are blooming, the animals are friendly, and there’s always fun to be had.
