Dried Flowers at Howell’s and How it Started

The Story Behind Howell’s Dried Flowers

This week’s Howell’s History highlights how our journey into dried flowers began! If you missed our last post about the beginning of our dried flower journey you can catch it here.

It all started with Farmer Fred growing a small crop of statice and strawflowers on just a quarter acre of land. 🌾 To dry them, he’d hang bunches upside down and use a specialized kiln—originally built to dry lumber for the farm’s sawmill! 🪓 While you can dry flowers at home, it usually takes weeks. But with our custom kiln, we can dry flowers in just a few days. The homemade kiln, designed with thick glass and black sheet metal, allows for efficient air circulation to speed up the drying process. Since then, we’ve expanded to a larger shed with solar panels, improving our sustainability and drying methods.

The Next Step in Howell’s Dried Flower Process 🌸

We shared how we use our homemade kiln to dry flowers, but what happens after that? 🤔

Once the flowers are dried, they’re moved to the upstairs of our historic 1910 barn! Fred transformed the haymow into a beautiful space with 20-foot cascading ropes to hang the flowers for display. 😱 (I definitely wouldn’t be caught up there! 😬). The haymow remains open today, offering visitors a chance to shop and view our unique collection of dried flowers. If you haven’t seen it yet, it’s an experience you won’t want to miss—pictures don’t do it justice!
